A perforation is defined as a tiny hole in a thin web or material. It is generally present in an organized way (more than one quantity), where all the holes are termed perforation. Perforating is a process which is used to create perforations and in it the work-piece is punctured with a tool. It's main benefit is simple separation of two sections of material. Perforation is also helpful in sound deadening, filtration, or simply for enhancing the aesthetic value.
For perforating metal sheets, punch and die sets are used. Shearing of the work-piece is done by pressing the punch through it and into die. The pressing can be done with a hand tool or a machine. Then scrapping of mid-section of the work-piece takes place. The required shaped hole is made by shaping the die and punch. Here, the "clearance" should be maintained suitably for assuring a clean cut. The "clearance" is defined as the distance between the inner circumference of the die and the outside circumference of the punch. Then, on the size of work-piece, burrs are produced. Here, the work-piece is against the die.
MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION:
Sheets are perforated with round, oblong, square, etc. shaped holes as per the design requirement. Some of the commonly perforated materials are:
